2) Fairchild praises Gillibrand, Warren
http://www.politico.com/blogs/click/2013/08/fairchild-praises-gillibrand-warren-170676.html
Actress Morgan Fairchild, who has been active in supporting more women in politics for years, says in addition to Hillary Clinton, there is a growing list of rising female stars in D.C.
"It's great. And some of the women that are coming along now that really have just jumped in feet first and really making their mark in the Senate, Kirsten Gillibrand [D-N.Y.], Elizabeth Warren [D-Mass.], you've got different ones that are really getting out there and taking on some heavy issues as opposed to sort of meekly sitting in the back benches for a couple of years to get their feet wet," Fairchild said Friday on MSNBC's "Jansing and Co."
She said the women "jumping in feet first" helps them get more leadership roles.
"That's great and gives them a chance to move up that pecking order a lot faster, and reach, even if they don't run for president, reach chairmanships of committees and things [...]

http://www.politico.com/blogs/click/2013/08/kravitz-america-is-not-past-racism-170654.html
Singer and actor Lenny Kravitz says while the election of President Barack Obama did not mean there was no longer racism in America, and his movie "The Butler" comes out at an interesting time for race relations.
Speaking to MSNBC "Morning Joe" co-host Willie Geist, Kravitz was asked about the election of President Barack Obama, and the idea that a "magic wand" had been waved and America was past race.
"It just isn't so, but I think a lot of people wanted it to be so. And at the time I was touring in Europe, and that was the question I got every day when I was being interviewed: 'So America is not racist anymore,' and that's not the fact," Kravitz said.
The film is about a black butler who served eight presidents in the White House. Kravitz, who plays another White House butler in the film, said that when there's progress, some people want to hold on to old ways of thinking, and that [...]

http://www.politico.com/politico44/2013/08/bob-kerrey-in-talks-for-state-department-post-170699.html
Bob Kerrey is in talks to be the latest former senator to get a post at the State Department.
Kerrey, the two-term Nebraska Democrat who lost an attempted comeback bid last year, has since returned to New York, where he'd relocated to after leaving Washington to run the New School and live with his wife, comedy writer Sarah Paley.
But now that Kerrey's close friend and former Senate colleague John Kerry's in charge at Foggy Bottom, he's looking at getting involved, too.
"I've had conversations with them about taking on a project," Kerrey confirmed.
(PHOTOS: Stars at the State Department)
Kerrey wouldn't discuss what the "project" would be, but stressed that the position wouldn't be full-time--"I wouldn't actually use the word 'job,'" he said.
He also said that the discussions are not finalized, though some people have already been contacted as part of a procedural background check [...]

http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2013/08/npr-ep-teshima-walker-dead-at-170698.html
Some very sad news from NPR:
The award-winning executive producer of NPR's Tell Me More, Teshima Walker, died this morning at the age of 44 after a two-year battle with colon cancer. She is survived by her husband, writer Jimi Izrael, her parents, William and Vonceal Walker and her sister, Eureva Walker.
Since 2011, Walker was the executive producer for NPR's midday news program Tell Me More, hosted by Michel Martin. Walker was part of the public radio family for more than a decade. She first joined the afternoon newsmagazine All Things Considered as a journalism fellow in 2000. Later she spent three years as a producer for The Tavis Smiley Show, and then for News and Notes. In 2007, Walker signed on as senior supervising producer of Tell Me More, and served the program in various capacities for the next six years. A Chicago native, Walker first came to NPR by way of WBEZ, where she [...]

http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2013/08/report-fox-tv-studios-scrap-talks-to-produce-nbcs-170695.html
Fox Television Studios has cancelled its plans to produce NBC Entertainment's forthcoming mini-series about Hillary Clinton, according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter.
FTVS, the sister company of Fox News, revealed last Friday that it was in "the early stages" of discussions with NBC to to produce the mini-series and distribute it internationally.
But in the wake of the Republican National Committee's vote to bar NBC and CNN, which is producing a Hillary Clinton documentary film, from the GOP primary debates, FTVS has apparently pulled out.

6) Correction of the day, 'racist' edition
http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2013/08/correction-of-the-day-racist-edition-170682.html
Business Insider issued a big correction today, admitting it misquoted Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus as calling self-deportation "racist" when, in fact, he said it "hurts us."
Priebus was commenting on how terms like "self-deportation," a phrase Mitt Romney was known to use a lot during the 2012 campaign, are "horrific."
The correct quote: "Using the word 'self-deportation' -- it's a horrific comment to make," Priebus said. "I don't think it has anything to do with our party. When a candidate makes those comments, obviously, it hurts us."
Politics Editor Josh Barro told POLITICO the mistake was "just a mistranscription of an audio clip" and that an RNC staffer raised the issue with reporter Brett LoGiuarto.
"It was just a mistranscription of an audio clip," Barro said. "A staffer at the RNC raised the issue with Brett and we determined it was [...]

http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2013/08/rncs-nbc-cnn-boycott-to-benefit-univision-170671.html
In a highly anticipated move, the Republican National Committee voted unanimously on Friday to deny NBC and CNN the rights to host or sponsor a Republican primary debate unless those two networks cancel their respective Hillary Clinton film projects.
"CNN and NBC anchors will just have to watch on their competitors' networks," RNC chairman Reince Priebus told the committee members in Boston.
While NBC and CNN's competitors stand to benefit from the RNC's decision, there's another potential winner who has gone unmentioned: Univision.
On Friday, RNC communications director Sean Spicer told POLITICO that the boycott would extend to NBC and CNN's Spanish-language channels: Telemundo and CNN Espa
"My understanding is that they both would be excluded," Spicer wrote in an email.
That leaves Univision, the country's leading Spanish-language network, as the obvious go-to for any Republican [...]

8) RNC votes: No debates for NBC, CNN
http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2013/08/rnc-votes-no-debates-for-nbc-cnn-170672.html
The Republican National Committee has voted unanimously to bar NBC and CNN from hosting GOP primary debates in 2016 if the networks move forward with their Hillary Clinton projects.
"The RNC unanimously passed a resolution preventing the committee from partnering with CNN and NBC for debates if they don't drop their Hillary Clinton productions ahead of the 2016 presidential election," an RNC release stated.
My colleague James Hohmann has the full details:
RNC Chairman Reince Priebus got an extended standing ovation from cheering state chairmen during the party's summer meeting for spearheading the push.
"We're done putting up with this nonsense," he said. "CNN and NBC will just have to watch on their competitors' network...The media overplayed their hand this time."

National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden has released a statement to The Huffington Post pleading with the media to stop listening to his father.
Snowden, who recently was granted temporary asylum in Russia, said neither his father, stepmother or father's attorney are in any way involved in his situation, and "this will not change in the future."
"I ask journalists to understand that they do not possess any special knowledge regarding my situation or future plans, and not to exploit the tragic vacuum of my father's emotional compromise for the sake of tabloid news," Snowden wrote.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2013/08/oreilly-gave-k-to-al-sharptons-charity-170663.html
In an effort to counter an attack from MSNBC's Al Sharpton, Fox News host Bill O'Reilly revealed on Thursday that he once gave $25,000 to Sharpton's charity so that it could provide Christmas presents and dinners to poor people in Harlem.
Rev. Sharpton, who confirmed the donation in an interview with POLITICO, had criticized O'Reilly of "attacking the poor" because he opposed food stamps and because he referred to one person -- a surfer with dubious claims to the food stamp program -- as "a parasite."
On Fox, O'Reilly said that Sharpton had taken his remarks out of context and was not telling the truth.
(Also on POLITICO: Rush re-ups, Hannity out at Cumulus)
"And here's the crusher on Sharpton," O'Reilly added. "He's been portraying me as a racist and a brutalizer of the poor. A few years ago Sharpton told me that his charity in Harlem, New York, was out of money and that it could [...]
